• And, for the benefit of successful bidders, here is a bit of history in time for your next dinner party from our resident wine expert: “In 1925, Rothschild decided that all his wine should be bottled at the chateau rather than in Bordeaux, a revolutionary notion at the time.
  
  “After World War II, he came up with the inspired idea of commissioning each year a different, often world-famous, artist to paint a picture for the upper part of the label.
  
  "The works of Chagall and Andy Warhol have adorned every vintage of Mouton since 1945. And Chagall was commissioned for this, the 1970 Mouton.” 

• And in 1982, Master of Wine Jancis Robinson wrote in her tome ‘The Great Wine Book’ that Moutons cellar master Raoul Blondin pronounced on the 1970 vintages: “The 1978 and 1979 are both great, but whereas 1978 has finesse the 1979 has body, the 1976 hasn’t really got the constitution of most of our wines for a very long life; I am enjoying it already.
  
  “The 1978 will need another 25 years, the 1975 another 40 and the 1970 another 30.”
   
• …So, by that reckoning, the 1970 should be just about ready to drink!
